What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today
1. A Football Case Could Impact Women’s Basketball 👀
Football really does rule everything. A court ruling involving Texas Tech football player Brendan Sorsby is creating ripple effects far beyond the football field. Sorsby admitted to betting on at least 40 of his own games and was ruled ineligible by the NCAA, but a judge overturned that decision on Monday. Several athletic directors across different conferences are now discussing whether they will refuse to schedule all sports against the Red Raiders. (Yahoo Sports)
WHY IT MATTERS: If schools follow through on those threats, this will affect Texas Tech’s women’s basketball schedule as well, especially their non-conference schedule, where important early season match-ups can help determine future tournament seeding. The ruling also hurts the NCAA’s ability to enforce its anti-gambling policy among student-athletes. While no scheduling changes have formally been made yet, and the NCAA is likely to appeal the Sorsby ruling, this is another ground shaking moment in this new world of college athletics .

2. Meet the Next Generation of Stars ⭐
The next superstar could be a 15-year-old. ESPN updated its SC Next rankings for the high school classes of 2027 and 2028 and introduced its first rankings for the class of 2029. The lists highlight some of the top high school players in the country and offer an early look at future recruiting battles.
WHY IT MATTERS: These rankings help provide visibility into who the top college programs are recruiting and often introduce fans to players years before they reach national attention at the college level. Some of the names at the top of these lists could become some of the most recognizable players in women’s basketball over the next decade.

3. Frustration Is Growing in Chicago 😤
The windy city is having a cold spell. The Chicago Sky have now lost six of their last seven games and sit at 4-7 after opening the season 3-1. Following Sunday’s loss to the Toronto Tempo, veteran guard Skylar Diggins described the team’s recent stretch as “an extremely frustrating experience.” (USA Today)
WHY IT MATTERS: Chicago pushed its chips toward the middle of the table this offseason, trading draft assets and overhauling the roster in hopes of competing right away. At first glance, it was working out well. We even spotlighted the Sky as a great turnaround story. But then they lost Rickea Jackson to a season-ending ACL injury, and the losses are piling up. There’s still a lot of season left to play, but this is not the direction the Sky envisioned when they made those aggressive moves.
