What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today
1. Kelsey Mitchell Reaches 5,000 Career Points 🎯
She may be quiet, but when Kelsey Mitchell has something to say, she lets her game do the talking. The 3x All-Star finished with 25 points to help the Indiana Fever open Commissioner's Cup play with a win over top seeded Atlanta. Along the way, she became the 30th player in WNBA history to reach 5,000 career points. (Indiana Fever)
WHY IT MATTERS: Reaching 5,000 points is impressive on its own. What's even more remarkable is how quickly Mitchell got there. Many of the players around her on the all-time scoring list needed nearly 100 more games to reach the same milestone. This humble star continues to be one of the most effective scorers in the league.
🗳️ Where does Kelsey Mitchell rank among today's WNBA guards?

2. A New WNBA Rule Has Its First Success Story 📈
Less than one month on the job and already promoted. The Washington Mystics converted 22-year-old Spanish rookie Alicia Flórez from a developmental player contract to a standard contract, making her the first player to do so under the WNBA's new CBA rules. (SB Nation)
WHY IT MATTERS: This is the first season teams can carry up to two developmental players who practice with the team and can appear in up to 12 games. Flórez made the most of it. After making her WNBA debut on May 27, she quickly earned rotation minutes and averaged 7.3 points and 4.3 assists across three games. Her promotion shows exactly how teams hoped this new role would work, providing players opportunities to prove themselves while they get familiarity with the franchise staff and systems.

3. Team USA Is Still Perfect at the 3x3 World Cup 🇺🇸
The U.S. women finished pool play with a perfect 4-0 record and have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIBA 3x3 World Cup. They'll face the winner of the France vs. Czechia play-in game on Saturday afternoon. (USA Basketball)
WHY IT MATTERS: Team USA has been dominant at times in 3x3, but consistency has been harder to find. The Americans won gold in 2023, yet failed to medal in five of the past six World Cups. With the knockout rounds now here, this is a chance to show they can once again be the team to beat on the world stage.
