What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Napheesa Collier Out Until June 🤕

Napheesa Collier is expected to miss the start of the 2026 WNBA season after undergoing surgery on her left ankle on March 24. The current timeline has her returning in early June. (CBS Sports)

WHY IT MATTERS: Collier is one of the best players in the world, coming off a season where she averaged 22.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and finished second in MVP voting. Losing her hurts. The Lynx reshaped their frontcourt this offseason, bringing in Natasha Howard and Nia Coffey while moving on from key pieces like Alanna Smith and Jessica Shephard. There’s enough talent in the backcourt with Kayla McBride, Courtney Williams, and rookie Olivia Miles to keep things steady early. But if this team wants to make a real title push, they’ll need Collier back and healthy.

2. FIBA Hall of Fame Class Welcomes New Legends 🏆

The FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2026 was honored in Berlin, with Sue Bird, Céline Dumerc (France), Clarisse Machanguana (Mozambique), and Ismenia Pauchard (China) recognized. (FIBA)

WHY IT MATTERS: This is one of the biggest honors in basketball around the world. It celebrates players who made an impact far beyond just one league or one country. Seeing Sue Bird on this list feels right, especially when you remember she won five Olympic gold medals and helped Team USA dominate for two decades.

3. Team USA Draws Group for 2026 World Cup 🌎

The groups are set for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, and Team USA will face Czechia, Italy, and China in Group D. The tournament runs September 4–13. (USA Basketball)

WHY IT MATTERS: This tournament only comes around every four years, and it’s a major moment for women’s basketball globally. The WNBA will pause during the event so top players can represent their countries. Team USA is chasing a fifth straight title, and with Kara Lawson leading the group, the expectation is a gold medal as always. The roster will come later, but if it looks anything like 2022, it’ll feature the country’s best.
