What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Atlanta Dream Keep Rolling 🏀

The Atlanta Dream are now 4-1 and sit atop the WNBA standings after another comeback win, this time rallying from 15 points down to beat Phoenix on Sunday. It’s the second time this season Atlanta has erased a 15-point deficit to win a game. (AP News)

WHY IT MATTERS: Atlanta is the only WNBA team left with just one loss, and the Dream are quickly becoming the team to beat. The organization managed to keep its core together during a wild offseason, and that continuity already looks like a big reason for the team’s early success. The addition of Angel Reese has also given Atlanta even more toughness and energy. Great teams find ways to win even when things aren’t going smoothly, and the Dream have already shown they can handle adversity early in the season.

2. Kelsey Plum Is Off to the Best Start of Her Career 🔥

Kelsey Plum has been unstoppable for the Sparks so far this season. She took it to another level last weekend, scoring 38 points in Las Vegas to beat her former team and spoil the Aces’ championship banner night.

WHY IT MATTERS: Plum was already a 4-time All-Star entering this season, but this may end up being the best basketball of her career. Before this year, she averaged 15.1 points and 4.3 assists per game across eight seasons. Right now, she’s averaging a league-leading 26.8 points along with 6.3 assists per game while trying to help turn the Sparks back into a playoff contender. If she keeps this up, don’t be surprised if her name starts showing up in the MVP conversation.

3. The WNBA’s New CBA Is Officially Final 🤝

The WNBA and WNBPA officially signed the league’s new collective bargaining agreement last Friday, completing the final step in a process that players ratified back in March. The agreement had already been approved by both sides, but this officially finalized the full long-form document. (WNBA)

WHY IT MATTERS: The union and the WNBA Board of Governors already approved the new CBA earlier this year, and many of the new salary and player benefit changes are already in effect this season. This signing officially puts all of the finalized details into writing and closes the loop on one of the biggest agreements in league history. It’s another major step forward for women’s basketball and women’s sports overall.
