What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today
1. Houston Is Sticking With Rachid Meziane ☄️
Close that job application. The Houston Comets will keep Rachid Meziane as head coach when the franchise moves from Connecticut next season. Meziane joined the Sun in 2025. (USA Today)
WHY IT MATTERS: With a new ownership group, a move to Houston, and rough 2026 season, plenty of people expected a coaching change. Instead, Meziane will stay alongside team president Jennifer Rizzotti and general manager Morgan Tuck. That gives the Comets familiar leadership as they start a new chapter in Texas.
🗳️ What do you think of the Comet's decision to keep leadership?

2. JuJu Watkins Picks Up Where She Left Off 👀
JuJu is officially back. JuJu Watkins, the 2024-2025 National Player of the Year, scored 21 points in USC’s season opening win against UNLV, making a strong return after missing all of last season with an ACL injury. (Bleacher Report)
WHY IT MATTERS: Watkins is one of college basketball’s biggest stars, and fans have been waiting to see her back on the court. She enters the season as a preseason candidate to repeat as National Player of the Year. It’s a long season ahead, but her performance on Monday is an encouraging start.

3. The Finals Coaches Who Took the Long Road 🚦
2026 might be the year of the underdog. The WNBA Finals not only featured two teams vying for their first championship, but also coaches with non-traditional playing backgrounds. Natalie Nakase started as a walk-on at UCLA before becoming their starting point guard, while Atlanta assistant Chelsea Lyles played two seasons at Western Nebraska Community College before transferring to FGCU. (NJCAA)
WHY IT MATTERS: With the college season starting, this is a reminder that talent can come from anywhere. Whether it’s a mid-major, D2, D3, or junior college, one of these athletes may end up in the pros some day. There may be someone in your own backyard!
