What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Tamika Catchings Rejoins the Fever as an Ambassador

Tamika Catchings is officially back with the Indiana Fever, stepping into a newly created ambassador role. The position will also connect her with the Indiana Pacers and the Pacers’ G League affiliate, the Noblesville Boom. (USA Today)

WHY IT MATTERS: Catchings is Indiana basketball. She spent all 15 of her WNBA seasons with the Fever, made 10 All-Star teams, and helped bring the franchise its 2012 championship. Having her back in a visible, community-facing role feels like a full-circle moment for the organization and a big win for Indy fans who watched her define the Fever for a decade and a half.

2. Tara VanDerveer Honored as a Naismith Outstanding Contributor 👏

Tara VanDerveer has been named a recipient of the 2026 Naismith Outstanding Contributor to Basketball Award, recognizing her lasting impact on the game. (Stanford Athletics)

WHY IT MATTERS: VanDerveer’s track record is almost impossible to top. She won three national titles at Stanford, piled up more than 1,200 career wins, and shaped generations of players over decades. Her influence also stretches beyond college basketball. As head coach of the undefeated 1996 U.S. Olympic team, she helped spark the momentum that led directly to the launch of the WNBA.

3. Project B Announces Tokyo Games in 2027 🌍

The new women’s pro league Project B announced it will play games in Tokyo in April 2027. It’s the first official city revealed on the league’s inaugural schedule. (FOX Sports)

WHY IT MATTERS: This is the most concrete update we’ve gotten from Project B in a while. The league made noise by signing WNBA stars and talking about higher salaries, but details have been limited and it’s been fair to wonder how real it all is. Locking in a city and dates makes this feel more tangible and suggests the league is starting to move beyond talk ahead of its November 2026 launch.
