What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Rickea Jackson Out for the Season With ACL Tear 😢

Chicago’s fears have been confirmed. The Sky announced that Rickea Jackson will miss the rest of the 2026 WNBA season after suffering a torn ACL. (ESPN)

WHY IT MATTERS: This is a big loss for a Chicago team that has surprised a lot of people early this season (see our email yesterday). Jackson had been one of the breakout stars so far this season, averaging a career-best 18 points per game. The big question now is whether Chicago can keep this momentum going without one of its most important players.

2. Connecticut Sun Begin Their “Sunset Season” ☀️

The end of an era is near. The Connecticut Sun announced plans to honor franchise legends throughout the 2026 season as part of what the team is calling its “Sunset Season.” Former Sun players and staff Alyssa Thomas, Jonquel Jones, Tina Charles, Jasmine Thomas, Curt Miller, and Mike Thibault will all be recognized as “Sun Legends” before the franchise relocates to Houston after this season. (Connecticut Sun)

WHY IT MATTERS: The Sun spent more than two decades helping push the WNBA forward, building one of the league’s most consistent franchises that produced big time talent. Now they’ll get a chance to celebrate the people who shaped the impactful organization before the next chapter begins in Texas. These honorees will join previous Sun Legends in the rafters at Mohegan Sun Arena.

3. The 2026 Women’s World Cup Schedule Is Official 🌍

FIBA released the full game schedule for the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will take place September 4–13 in Berlin. Team USA opens Group D play against China on September 4, followed by Italy on September 6 and Czechia on September 7. (FIBA)

WHY IT MATTERS: Outside of the Olympics, this is the biggest event in international women’s basketball. The United States has won the last four World Cups and 11 overall, more than any other country. The roster is still to be determined, but with Kara Lawson coaching and the world’s best players likely involved, this tournament is shaping up to be one of the biggest basketball events of next year.
