What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Caitlin Clark Breaks Another WNBA Record 🔥

Caitlin Clark finished with 21 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds in the Indiana Fever’s 89-78 win over the Seattle Storm on Sunday. In the process, she set a new WNBA record with her 12th game of at least 20 points and 10 assists, passing Courtney Vandersloot’s previous record of 11. (ESPN)

WHY IT MATTERS: What makes this record so impressive is how fast Clark reached it. She has played just 57 WNBA games and already passed a mark set by Vandersloot, one of the best point guards in league history, now in her 15th season. Yes, Clark is one of the league’s top scorers. She’s also one of its best playmakers, constantly creating easy shots for her teammates.

2. More NCAA Tournament Teams? Coaches Are Split 🤔

The NCAA Tournament will expand from 68 to 76 teams starting next season, and people around women’s basketball have mixed feelings about it. Some coaches believe it will create more opportunities for programs to get national attention, especially mid-major schools that do not usually the spotlight during March Madness. (Front Office Sports)

WHY IT MATTERS: More teams in the tournament could help grow the game by bringing in new fan bases and giving more programs a chance to be seen on a national stage. But not everyone is convinced the extra spots will go to deserving mid-major teams. Critics worry many of those bids will instead go to average power conference teams. There are also concerns about player health, since college basketball already has a long season and the added games could lead to more fatigue and injuries.

3. Rickea Jackson Leaves Game With Scary Knee Injury 😫

Chicago Sky forward Rickea Jackson left Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Lynx after suffering a non-contact knee injury in the first half. She did not return, and the team has not yet shared an update on her status. (Yahoo Sports)

WHY IT MATTERS: This would be a huge loss for Chicago if Jackson misses time. She’s been one of the Sky’s best players to start the season, averaging 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2 blocks per game while quickly becoming the emotional heartbeat of this revamped Sky roster. After joining the team from the Sparks in one of the offseason’s biggest trades, she immediately became one of Chicago’s top offensive options and a top-10 scorer in the league. We are really hoping the injury isn’t serious.
