What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Brittney Griner Stands Alone 👑

Brittney Griner is now the WNBA's all-time leader in career blocks. Griner recorded the 878th block of her career on Monday, moving past FIBA Hall of Famer Margo Dydek for the most blocks in league history. (The Athletic)

WHY IT MATTERS: For years, Dydek's record felt untouchable. But Griner has spent her entire 13-year career changing the way opponents attack the basket, forcing teams to rethink how they play in the paint. This milestone honors one of the greatest defensive careers the league has ever seen, and it may be a very long time before anyone catches her.

2. Flau'jae Johnson Will Play In Unrivaled 🏀

Consider it a promotion. Unrivaled announced that Storm rookie Flau'jae Johnson signed a multiyear deal with the league as a player. She was previously signed to an NIL deal with the league while in college. (Reuters)

WHY IT MATTERS: Johnson first signed an NIL deal with Unrivaled while she was still at LSU and received an equity stake in the league. It might have seemed obvious that she would eventually play there as a pro, but recent player decisions have shown that former NIL signees are not automatically staying with Unrivaled. Johnson's decision gives her another opportunity to develop her game against some of the top players in the world.

3. The Storm Are in Unfamiliar Territory ⛈️

t’s extra cloudy in Seattle these days. The Storm lost an overtime thriller to the Dallas Wings last night, extending their losing streak to 11 games and setting a new franchise record for consecutive losses. It's an unwanted milestone for one of the WNBA's most successful organizations. (Seattle Times)

WHY IT MATTERS: Seattle made significant changes this offseason, including moving on from head coach Noelle Quinn and hiring Sonia Raman to lead a revamped, younger roster. The talent is there, but the pieces have not clicked yet. For a franchise that won championships in 2018 and 2020, this stretch is a stark reminder that rebuilding is rarely a smooth process.
