What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Tanisha Wright Returns to Penn State 📋

Penn State is hiring Chicago Sky assistant and former Atlanta Dream head coach Tanisha Wright as its next head coach, bringing the Lady Lion alum back to where she built her name as a player. (Penn State Athletics)

WHY IT MATTERS: Wright is coming back to a place that shaped her career. After five years coaching in the WNBA, including three as a head coach, she brings pro-level experience into a program that’s looking to take a step forward after an 11–18 season. A three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year during her time there, she now gets the chance to lead her alma mater.

2. A Winningest Coach Steps Away 🏀

Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Insell announced his retirement after 21 seasons, finishing with 505 wins as the winningest coach in program history. (Middle Tennessee News)

WHY IT MATTERS: You just don’t see runs like this as often anymore. Insell built his program over decades, in a college landscape that looked very different than today. With transfers and NIL changing how teams are built, this kind of long-term stability is getting harder to find. He also coached WNBA standout Alysha Clark, showing his ability to develop players who could reach the next level.

3. A New Look at Pat Summitt’s Legacy 🎥

A new documentary on Pat Summitt, "Breaking Glass: The Pat Summitt Story", will premiere March 25 on Hulu, with Robin Roberts and Emmy-winning director Dawn Porter helping bring the story to life. (Knox News)

WHY IT MATTERS: Pat Summitt helped shape what women’s basketball looks like today. Over 38 seasons at Tennessee, she won 1,098 games, eight national titles, and graduated every player who finished their eligibility. You can still feel her influence across the sport. This is a chance for a new generation to see why.
