What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. ESPN Goes Behind the Scenes with the WNBA 📺

Grab some popcorn, All-Star Weekend just got even more exciting. ESPN has announced "Life in the W," a six-part docuseries following A'ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and DeWanna Bonner during the 2025 WNBA season. The series premieres on July 24 and promises an inside look at life on and off the court. (USA Today)

WHY IT MATTERS: The 2025 season had no shortage of storylines. A'ja Wilson won her fourth MVP and third WNBA championship, the league navigated a collective bargaining agreement year, and interest in women's basketball kept growing. This series gives fans a chance to see those moments from a new perspective while bringing even more attention to the league.

2. Four Conferences Create a New Opening Weekend Tournament 🏀

The Ivy League, American Conference, Atlantic 10, and Missouri Valley Conference have announced a new two-year scheduling partnership that will match their top teams against one another during opening weekend. (Ivy league)

WHY IT MATTERS: Much of the attention in women's college basketball goes to the Power 4 conferences. This is a great example of mid-major conferences creating opportunities for themselves. Strong early-season matchups can help teams prepare for March while giving fans another event to look forward to each November.

3. NCAA Eligibility Rules Stay in Limbo ⚖️

Not so fast, NCAA. A judge has issued a preliminary injunction for the women's and men's basketball players challenging the NCAA's new age-based eligibility rules. The ruling keeps the previous eligibility standards in place for those players, and opens a new transfer portal window for them, while the lawsuit moves forward. (ESPN)

WHY IT MATTERS: The NCAA's new eligibility model is still being tested in the courts. For now, this decision preserves the status quo, but bigger questions about who is eligible to play and how future rules will work remain unresolved.
